sec_error_unknown_issuer SOLVED

What does it mean The certificate is not trusted because no issuer chain was provided ? What is Error code: sec_error_unknown_issuer ? You may notice these errors in Firefox while visiting web site with misconfigured SSL certificate installation. Most likely it means that installed certificate has failed to meet the latest Mozilla CA Certificate Policy.
sec_error_unknown_issuer
Firefox is more stringent than Chrome, IE and other browsers and will require proper installation of an intermediate server certificate. You could verify you certificate installation with the command that display the whole server certificate chain:
openssl s_client -connect host:443 -showcerts

  • Verify return code: 21 (unable to verify the first certificate) - tells you have a problem with certificate installation and you have to re-install it properly.
  •  Verify return code: 0 (ok) - everything is fine on the server side and most likely there is an issue on your machine. For example you could try to delete or rename cert8.db file in Firefox profile directory.
